The threshold where the maths flips is roughly: anywhere with revenue dependence, regulatory obligation, or a team whose time is worth more than a retainer fee. The order in which to start, if you're moving
If you're considering moving from break-fix to proactive managed services, here's the order we'd usually recommend:
- Inventory and current state. Two-week assessment. What runs where, what's been deferred, what's actually broken. This work isn't lost — it becomes the baseline for everything that follows.
- Foundation tier first. Don't jump straight to 24×7. Start with 8×5 cover, prove the model, find the gaps. Most clients spend 3-6 months at Foundation before stepping up.
- SLO definition. Before agreeing SLAs, agree the SLOs (service-level objectives) the system actually needs to hit. Many SLAs are calibrated against numbers the system has never actually delivered. Fix that.
- Step up to Operations once trust is there. 24×7, P1 incident response, full on-call rotation. This is where the model starts paying for itself.
